Rock Your Yoga

Sadie Nardini
Since committing to my November goal of attending yoga classes, I've been making an effort to attend yoga class twice a week. I've been fairly successful. (Going to classes really works for me because the order and types of poses changes slightly each time, keeping me interested, and I like having it on my schedule. Then exercise just becomes part of my routine. Plus other people in the class ask if I’ll be there, where I was if I miss, etc. and they keep me accountable. Yoga DVDs are my best friend for a week or two; after that I slowly start to get sick of them.)

But this fall my one yoga teacher went through some rough patches with family issues and scheduling conflicts, and cancelled class more often than not. Unfortunately, at the end of January, she decided to nix her night class altogether, meaning I've dropped down to one class a week. Besides being bummed about the fact that this instructor wasn't teaching anymore (she's great), I don't know of any other local teachers who only charge $5 for a hour class (the going rate is $15-20, which is wayyy out of my price range if I want to take 2 classes a week).

So with snowflakes encouraging me to stay indoors this weekend, I ended up looking for yoga on tv. I was pleasantly surprised to find two yoga shows! One airs monthly, so I haven't seen it yet, but the other one is awesome! It's Rock Your Yoga with Sadie Nardini and I love her attitude. The episode I watched focused on having fun and enjoying yoga practice. She sang a little and even purposely messed up so she could be an example of just laughing it off. :) I think this will keep my interest better than a DVD since she does a new show every day, but only time will tell. Maybe I'll even start doing more than 2 sessions a week!

Do you ever exercise with a tv program or DVD? I like to close the blinds first ;)

  1. I love yoga, but I'm not big on classes - having to go somewhere & keep a schedule just makes me dread it... not to mention the money. My favorite show was one called Yoga Zone that used to be on daily - just short little half hour workouts. This was 15-20 years ago back when I still had cable and a VCR so I have 6 tapes full of different yoga zone episodes. It's nice because you get something different every day. I'm not sure what I'll do when the tapes finally wear out! I've managed to find a few episodes on YouTube - and I have my TV connected to my computer so I can watch them on the TV, but there's only a few episodes up there! However, there are endless amounts of other yoga stuff on YouTube so sometimes I just choose something random.

The other thing I do is just make up my own workouts with whichever poses my body seems to need at the moment. The only "issue" doing it that way is that I tend not to push myself enough. But sometimes I'll do it while I watch TV and I'll bargain with myself - like I'll say I have to keep doing sun salutations until the next commercial break, or hold a warrior 2 until a commercial is done. I realize I don't get the whole mind/body relaxation thing when you do yoga that way because my attention isn't completely on my practice, but it works for me when I'm having trouble getting motivated.

    1. I struggle with yoga on the computer - partially the tiny screen but also the volume can't be adjusted very high. But I should look around on youtube and see what I can find. I definitely can't wing it! If I planned my yoga routines, I'd do tree and cobra for 20 minutes and never do chair again! (haha, my Wii actually tracks how many times you do certain activities; there are certain poses that I've done once, and others I've done 100+ times.)

I like the yoga during commercials idea - I use my laptop on the couch next to hubby while he watches tv, so I could definitely get up for those few minutes!

    2. Ha! I'm with you on the chair pose... to say nothing of its sadistic cousin the Eagle. Of course, I did blow my knee out 6 years ago, and it still makes a marvelous excuse for those poses that I hate... actually the one that bothers it the most is Dancer. I just have to be REALLY careful not to tug on my foot too much or it sets my knee off every time. Anyhow, the laziness factor definitely comes into play when making one's own routines!

Does your computer have an HDMI output? Mine does, so I just ran a cable to the TV and then I can watch YouTube on my television. I do have to futz with the Windows sound settings to make the sound come out of the TV, but once I got it figured out I made a shortcut so it's easy to find it. If I had to try to use the screen and speakers on my computer I don't think it would work so well for me. In a pinch I might be able to put my tablet on the floor and do it that way, but it wouldn't really be the same.

    3. Dancer is really tough! I can hold that for all of about 8 seconds. I can see how that would bother your knee! I'll have to see about hooking up my laptop definitely. That would be amazing :)

  2. She looks so effortlessly flexible in the photo! I haven't tried exercising with TV or a DVD yet, but I think it would work well for something like Yoga if you have a bit of real-life background in it already. Do you find it hard to get motivated without a group (or does it make you more likely to do do it "in the comfort of your own home")?

    1. I find exercise time at home gets pushed to the side more easily (like, oh I'll do it after I finish with the dishes) until suddenly it's bedtime and I haven't exercised yet. But it is nice to have options on days when I'm feeling antsy/restless but the weather isn't conducive to a walk or leaving the house. And, it's free! I have to keep reminding myself of that.

  3. I tried yoga once a week for 6 weeks and liked it, but I also thought it would take twice a week to really get the benefits, and I didn't commit to it. The TV show sounds like a good option especially after you've already had an in-person intro.

    1. Agreed! I was attending class on Wednesdays and Thursdays and I felt a little looser during Thursday night classes - almost like Wednesday's class got my muscles ready.
