October Garden Update

Ahh fall. I love the crisp air and cooler nights, but it also means the end of the growing season. Usually about this time I'm itching for a break from the garden and yard work in general so it's perfect timing. And this year is no different - hubby mowed the lawn one last time last weekend, I trimmed the dead stuff hanging around and put the Halloween decorations out.

But the garden's not ready to close up shop yet.
Specifically, the tomatoes. We are still steady picking cherry tomatoes - about 30 - 40 a day. The plants are actually lifting their support cage out of the ground! (See how it's tipping to the left?) So I guess I won't get my break from gardening for another few weeks.

But I can't complain. Free food is free food!

How's your garden look?

  1. Wow, those are prolific tomatoes! I usually have to keep mowing the lawn until Remembrance Day. It's been warm this Fall, so maybe longer. I'll be able to delay getting the snow tires put on!

    1. They are! It's been warmer than usual here too, so maybe that's why they're hanging around. Do you have snow on the ground through most of winter then?

  2. We've had a few nights of freezing so I think our garden is pretty much done for this year, except for our carrots. I'm looking forward to closing up shop and focusing on winter!

  3. I'm encouraged by seeing your cherry tomatoes. I've never tried those. I like plants that hang in there. The only thing thats still going strong in my garden is peppers.

    1. I've grown them the past two summers with great success and they've been very easygoing :)

  4. My landlords' cherry tomatoes have just started to ripen, and since they're away they've told me to help myself :)

We can garden all through winter, but my plants have started taking off recently. I have lots of kale plants that I need to thin out and finally some chillies. Most of my parsley was eaten by the possums, but it's starting to grow back.

    1. That's nice of them! Nothing better than food in your backyard :)

Animals are funny - we had such a problem with rabbits the first year, but they haven't been back since. No idea why though. Maybe it'll be the same with your possum friends.
