Gender Predictions from Old Wives' Tales

Mr. G and I aren't finding out early if our baby is a boy or a girl - we're happy to wait until the baby is born. Of course I've heard a lot of predictions (adamant predictions!) so I thought I'd go through some old wives' tales for fun.

Morning sickness - nausea = girl, little/no nausea = boy

For me:  on/off nausea depending on the day = girl

Chinese Gender Chart - a chart matching your age and month of conception

For me:  girl

Mayan Gender Prediction - add the year of conception and the mother's age. Even number = girl, odd number = boy

For me:  girl

Baby's heart rate  - over 140 bpm = girl, under 140 bpm = boy

For me:  the baby's had a range of heartbeats, so inconclusive! Besides, our midwife said the heartbeat gradually slows down over the course of the pregnancy anyway.

Season of conception - winter = girl, summer = boy, spring and fall = equal chance

For me:  conceived in the winter = girl

Cravings - craving sweet = girl, craving sour/salty = boy

For me:  I couldn't stand anything sweet at first, but sour/salty have been tasty all along = boy

Skin - acne = girl, clear skin = boy

For me:  a good amount of pimples/blemishes = girl

Final Tally:  Girl:  5    Boy:  1    Inconclusive: 1

Leaning heavily toward girl! Anyone want to add their guess? Would you/did you find out the gender of your baby before it was born?

  1. Love this!! I may have to share my results in a blog post. ;-) I'll go with girl for you, too. Have you done the needle &/or wedding ring on a string "test"? What about the whole "carrying up front vs all over/carrying high vs low" thing? (Oh, and we don't find out, either!)

    1. I'd love to read about your results! I haven't done any of the tests you mention - it can be a bonus round here in the comments - looking at my 23 week photo, is that carrying high or low?

  2. I love these progress shots!!

I would definitely have a surprise with my child, given there was nothing wrong etc. I actually did a course the other day with a colleague, she was due with her second, and they were going for the surprise, and I thought that was wonderful. So little now days is a surprise!

It's funny old wives tales and baby gender - I mean, surely research would show if all babies concieved in summer resulted in a certain gender at birth!? Certainly others that factor in more variable factors (mother's age) are at least more likely to seem 'random' and get it right. Still, it's fun to see what all the different 'things' say the gender will be, and imagine if you then have a boy?!!? That'd be a huge surprise!

    1. Thanks, me too! I don't realize how much the bump's grown until I see the photos side by side :)

I don't think any of these are accurate, haha! Just for fun :) I think I'll be surprised either way - still hard to wrap my head around the fact that I'll have a baby in about 3.5 months!

  3. It's fun to speculate! I am jaded about such things given my situation but I am sure you will have a lovely child ;)

  4. Wow - only 3.5 months to go! I was going to add the same two 'tests' as Meg. Also the 'diet' one - lots do diary around the time of conception supposedly leads to a girl!

I didn't find out but for some reason was 100% convinced as I was having a girl. So much so that we only finalised boy names during labour! Surprise - it was a boy! Lots of fun to speculate though. It's not long to go!

    1. Oh man, I wish I could remember what I ate dairy-wise around the time of conception! My bump looks high to me, which adds another tally to the girl side :)

The story about thinking your baby was a girl is funny! I haven't felt strongly one way or the other but hubby is sure it's a girl.

  5. It's all so exciting! I don't subscribe to any wives tales but had the wedding ring on a string test done by many. If it circles, a girl. Goes in a line, a boy. How stereotypical of primary sexual features, is genitals is that? I found out both of mine when they were born. Lovely little boys.
