NYC visit

Side note: Thank you so, so much for your comments last week. I truly appreciate all the love and kindness - it warmed my heart.

Mr. G and I visited NYC over the weekend. We are lucky to live close enough to make day trips there by bus. In the past, we've taken some very early buses. But getting up at 3:30 in the morning is AWFUL and the sleep deprivation makes me hungry (and a little cranky) all day. Not worth it.

This year we took a later bus and didn't get into the city until 11. We had a little less time but I felt like a normal human all day! Three cheers for sleep :)

The bus let us off at Radio City Music Hall, so we decided to visit Central Park first. Central Park holds a special place in my heart because that's where we got engaged (on another November day trip). Mr. G tricked me into standing on this rock with him to take a picture and then when we got up there, he proposed :)

After our trip down memory lane, we walked to Doughnut Plant, home of the Creme Brûlée doughnut. Creme brûlée is Mr. G's favorite dessert so he was excited to try the doughnut version, which didn't disappoint. I was most excited by the decor - doughnut-shaped pillows on the walls and doughnut designs on the bench seats.

It was about a 2 mile walk to the doughnut shop so we popped in and out of stores we passed along the way. One of the coolest was a Christmas market of sorts in Bryant Park (they also had an ice skating rink but the line was outrageous). I loved this stand with lights you could build out of recycled milk jug tiles.
To walk off all those doughnuts, we headed to the High Line, a park that repurposed out-of-use train tracks above the sidewalk. It was beautiful! I bet it's even better in the warmer months. My hands were chilly so this is the only photo I snapped.
We walked until it got dark, then did a google search for nearby restaurants. Fortunately, a vegan place, Blossom was only three tenths of a mile away. I knew it sounded familiar, but couldn't remember why at the time - I checked, and Dar was there last month! The food was excellent. Mr. G and I also enjoyed just sitting down!

Our time was almost up, so after dinner we started walking back to Radio City Music Hall. We spent our last bit of time poking around the shops and enjoying the eye candy near Rockefeller Center. The Christmas tree was trimmed but not lit up yet.

Overall a great day. We were in good spirits, and the weather was cloudy with flurries on and off (it must've known we were in the mood for some Christmas cheer). Lovely.

How was your weekend? Do you visit the place you got engaged?

  1. How cool to live within striking distance of New York! The Doughnut Place looks fabulous. Hope you both had a really wonderful weekend.

New York is a very romantic proposal location! I would definitely re-visit if I got engaged in Central Park. We got engaged in the car park of the flat I was living in at the time (lol!) and I don't think we've ever re-visited. Maybe we should, for old times' sake!

    1. Yes, we are lucky to live so close! I'm spoiled living on the East Coast because a lot of big cities are nearby.

Haha, a car park is a unique location to get engaged! :)

  3. I have become a seriously lazy NYC visitor! We did same bus in early, leave super late thing a few times, but now I always want to sleep in, stay the night, and leave by 2:00 the next afternoon. Old lady, right here.

Also, my husband tried to propose to me in Central Park, but it was an unsuccessful attempt - we were near the Met, eating dinner when we got a phone call from our bus company telling us our bus home had been cancelled and we needed to rush down to Chinatown to get on a different route. Oy! Sounds like you had much more success :-)

    1. Old ladies unite! We've never spent the night and since I'm still recovering from getting home past 9pm on Saturday night, we need to seriously consider coming home the following day.

Oh goodness! At least you have an interesting almost-proposal story :)

  4. It looks like a fun trip - but the weather looks cold! I spent the weekend in Melbourne for my sister's wedding, which was at the zoo (a great place for a wedding). It was a great day and fantastic to see all of my family :)

    1. Yes, we're lucky! We should visit more often but we kinda take it for granted since we're so close.

  7. Your NYC sounds lovely and the doughnuts look so irresistible, lucky you!
We do visit the place we got engaged, it was beach proposal near to our home so we went swimming there last summer and it's a nice beach walk, too! It makes me feel emotional, it is 'our' beach.

  8. Living right, you are. :)

We visited the place we got engaged this summer. It looks surprisingly unchanged unlike much of the world.

If you come to Ottawa, you should go to SuzyQ donuts.

  9. Your side note made me jump to your earlier entry and now my heart is still hurting for you.

NYC looked cold! But how lovely to have a day trip there. Mr S and I do day trips together but not to wherever it was we got engaged.

There was no proposal. And I am not the sort that wants a PROPOSAL. As a feminist, I came to an understanding that if we were to get married (which I never wanted and Mr S had other plans for his life) then each other was the one we would marry. Things kind of evolved from there. A ring. A wedding (much prompted by a friend who said if you don't get moving the date you set will arrive and people will turn up to nothing.) if Mr as had gone down on one knee, that would have been a sure sign that we were not meant to be together and were not sympatico.

    Still, I love your rock!

    1. It was cold! Quite a chilly day to spend so much time outside.

I'm glad you found someone to share your life with! And I think it's great that your story reflects your values :)
