Meet Monkey

We unexpectedly adopted another feline friend last week.

It all started when Mr. G dropped Capone off at the vet (to have a tooth removed) and commented on a cute kitten riding around on the vet's shoulders. As it turns out, the kitten was abandoned in a parking lot, picked up a few parasites and some burns, and then was dropped off at the vet's office. She was waiting for a good home. Mr. G and I discussed it at length, but really it came down to this - we wanted to help, and we were in the position to do it. So we brought her home.

She's been a joy. Very affectionate and curious. Keeping us entertained with all her antics. We love her already.

So why the name Monkey? Several things . . she likes to climb (just on people so far), she greets us with a little squeaking noise that reminds me of monkeys, and her favorite blanket is covered with - you guessed it - monkeys.

I'd love to hear how you name pets.

  1. Oh, she's so precious! Is that a burn on her little nose? It makes me happy just knowing that she'll have a wonderful forever home. How are the other cats taking to her?

Each of my cats has about 20 different names. Most of the cats I've had were neighborhood strays so they all got little pet names (like every animal I meet does) long before they became "mine." But Jasper & Smoky were different. They were abandoned in the alley as tiny kittens and somehow managed to make it up onto my back deck, where I quickly swooped them inside and adopted them. So CatMan and I actually had to choose names for them.

I had a list of about a zillion names, and one of them just happened to be Jasper. When I mentioned the name to CatMan he said it would be perfect for the orange one because jasper is apparently an orange colored mineral (he's an amateur geologist.) So then we decided we needed a gray colored mineral name for the other kitten. We thought of Micah - but we'd known a guy by that name and it just felt "wrong" somehow. Finally we settled on Smoky as in smoky quartz and it turned out to be perfect.

I hope your little Honey Monkey will bring you endless amounts of joy (see, I haven't even met her yet, and I've already given her a new nickname)!

    1. Yes, she has burns on her nose and some of her paws, but they look better every day. So far, so good with the other cats. She doesn't seem too interested in Capone, though she likes following Dottie around. My neighborhood doesn't have any stray cats (that I know of) - that situation would be so difficult for me. I would want to help them all!

I didn't realize Jasper was a mineral, what a perfect pair with Smoky!

haha, Honey Monkey - I like it! :)

  2. She is very cute. And you and Mr G are very good. I have thought about adopting an unwanted cat, but it wouldn't be fair to the cat as we are at work for too long.

  3. Awww, so sweet! Hi, Monkey, and congratulations on the new family member. You guys rock.

Beardslee was named after he was abandoned at our favorite fancy restaurant (a castle where we had our wedding reception) -- which is called Beardslee Castle.

Winston came with the name at the shelter, but the British sound went with his brother's name and his personality. Totally a lovable snob.

And we debated a couple of names for Jasper, but it rhymes with the shelter name (easier for him to learn) and I loved Jasper Dale on the old Avonlea TV series. He's a bit of a bumbling sweet guy, so it fits.

    Enjoy your little one!!

  4. Congrats on your new arrival! My cats are both named after cats in anime shows: Gigi (or Jiji) from Kiki's Delivery Service, and Luna from Sailor Moon. (We thought about calling the other one Artemis, but it just didn't suit her).

    1. OMG Dar, I saw Kiki's Delivery Service on the plane home from Japan!

we don't have pets but we named our ferns Boris and Rufus, but poor Rufus becomes any name that comes to the BF's mind!

    2. Oh, I love Kiki's Delivery Service. I need to watch that again. Luna is also the name of a cool character in Harry Potter - I adore that name.

    3. Too funny, Sarah! I used to have a plant named Bob (who eventually bloomed pink flowers, haha). Rufus is such a fun name.

  5. Congrats on your new addition! Monkey is very sweet! We've mostly chosen people names for pets. Our dog is Jake. Though I once had a budgie we called Stripey since he had stripes.

  6. Awwww...Monkey's adorable! You are very good to take her in. I badly want a cat but like Lucinda, currently work too many hours to be fair to a cat. I will have to get by on updates from Dottie, Capone and now Monkey!

  7. who could resist. cutie. since we usually got ours from the Humane society they came with names. When they were barn cats,...well, there was Montcalm who unlike the rest of his litter would challenge anyone or climb anything. Total spitfire. There was Bearess, who was like a boneless teddy, initially Bear because she looked male but then she had a litter...
