In the Garden: August 2014

Lots of changes in the garden over the past month.

The biggest thing is that we built a trellis! It's occupying the space that was originally potato plants (all harvested now). I ordered bamboo and lashing cord online and we followed these directions without too much trouble. We didn't manage to get all the pieces straight, but the beans we planted won't know the difference ;)

I think the most exciting part about the garden this time of year is that so many things are ready all at once. Here's a sample basket from a couple weeks ago:

I've also discovered that pulling up carrots would be a great activity for anyone feeling stressed or angry. What can be better than ripping up plants and getting yummy carrots as part of the bargain?

The flowers have really taken off too (some are nearly as tall as I am), and along with the ripening cherry tomatoes, they are making this side of the garden especially colorful. We've seen a lot more bees and butterflies this summer than in years previous so the extra flowers must be doing the trick!

Speaking of garden visitors . . I hope this guy turns into a chrysalis in the garden so I can see one up close!

So that's my garden this August. How's yours doing?

  1. Those cherry tomatoes look tempting! I love cherry toms! Just had some for dinner with a balsamic dressing.

And the pom-pom like flower next to the cherry toms is gorgeous.

    1. Mr. G agrees - when he picks the cherry tomatoes, very few make it into the house ;)

And I'm not sure what that pom pom flower is . . I planted a seed mix this year so I've been surprised by everything that's come up!

  4. I love seeing these posts...your garden grows so well! In the past, we've planted carrots, potatoes etc. but the carrots grew up 'corkscrewy' and the potatos were very small. Do you use a special type of fertiliser? The link to the trellis-making is great to have, too!

    1. This is the first time I've had success with carrots. They usually don't even come up! I have no idea what changed their minds this year.

I haven't used any fertilizer yet, only compost and garden soil bought at the store. (The black thing behind the right garden bed is our compost bin.) But I plan to add a little fertilizer around the squash plants this weekend because they aren't producing much.

  5. I like your trellis! I don't have a garden but I am constantly weeding areas that have no lawn. Given the amount of work it takes, I may as well have a garden, so I can at least get a little crop out of it!

    1. Thank you! If you're already weeding, it sounds like growing a little something in your backyard would be a great bonus :)

  6. I love seeing the cat "helping" build the trellis :) I also love the look of all those yummy carrots! My garden has been neglected but I recently planted some spinach, rocket and basil, so hopefully will have some yummy salad greens soon :)

  7. Your carrots are so much more perfect than the ones I grew! One of mine looked like it had two hands over it's privates, desperately wanting to the go to the bathroom - cute, but not really meal worthy! I did better with peas, though I liked them fresh I realised. I'm impressed, really impressed, by your haul.

    1. I wish I knew the carrot secret! They don't usually do well in my garden. haha, I had some funny shaped carrots as well but none as good as yours looking for a bathroom! Peas are finicky in my garden also so I usually only get 1-2 all season per plant (plus the squirrels love them so much that they steal them as soon as they're ripe).
