The Great Language Game

Have you played the Great Language Game? It's been making its way around the internets lately and I finally gave it a try yesterday. You listen to a clip of one of 80 languages and given 2 - 5 language choices, try to make the match.

I'm terrible! My best score was 500, which translates to 10 correct answers and 3 incorrect ones (after which you run out of "lives"). I got more of them through process of elimination than by actually recognizing the language.

And side note: I took four years of German classes and can identify it easily, so of course I wasn't presented with any German clips. grumble grumble. :)

I want to hear your score if you try!

    1. Glad you enjoyed it! :) I didn't get Portuguese when I played.

  2. Fun! Hadn't heard of this before...I got a 1050on the first try. That was only possible because it's multiple choice. And they repeat the same language a lot. :)

    1. 1050, impressive! :) I noticed some repetition on different games, but not during the same one.

  3. Oh gosh - I only scored 350 after several attempts! A bit embarrassing considering I'm a French teacher!

    1. My 500 took 4 tries! I say as long as you got French right, it's all good ;)

  4. I can't believe how learned your readers were. After several attempts and enlisting help from family members, we got to 550. There were so many languages I'd never heard of - I almost wonder (Fiona) whether it's a regional thing and we got harder ones... let's pretend that! Some of the clips, too, were accented - ie the one French I heard was not a 'Parisian' french speaker...

    1. There were a ton of languages I'd never heard of! On my first try, I only got 150, so no worries ;) And I agree on the accents - just think of all the English accents! That'd be super tough for a non-native speaker.

  5. Holy Moly! I was shocked at the number of languages I'd never even heard of! I got a 500... but I think there was a lot of luck involved since I was guessing on a fair number of them.

I'm totally laughing about the comment about the accents, because I am terrible at understanding different accents in English. I did some traveling by train through Europe in my younger days, and one time I was on this train when two guys started talking to me in some incomprehensible tongue. I turned to them and politely said "Ich kann nicht Deutsch gesprochen" to which they burst out laughing. Turned out they were Scottish, but their accent was so strong that I took it for German! Oh My!

    1. I got a few answers just by luck too, haha. :)

Oh how embarrassing! A thick Cajun or Scottish accent are tough for me too. And South African sometimes.

  6. Haha I got 150 on my second go :) There were a lot of languages I hadn't heard of either - we are so isolated in Australia!

    1. That's true - people who grew up around a lot of languages would definitely have an advantage (like Europe).
