Apple Cider Doughnuts

I'm not big on presentation. By that I mean - I can appreciate a gorgeous plate of food, but I have a tough time making food look that tempting at home. As long as it tastes good, I don't spend much energy on how it goes on the plate. And usually when I make something from a recipe book or website, my creation only has a slight resemblance to the original. (That might have something to do with how often I make substitutions while cooking, hmm.)

So, when we bought a doughnut mix to make as a special breakfast on Christmas Eve and they turned out almost exactly like the picture on the box - we were both surprised. In this house, that never happens!
And, I even found a recipe online so I can make them without a mix next time. Score!

Have you ever cooked something that looked like the picture? Is food presentation a strength for you?

  1. They look great! I'm not big on presentation either - I make a lot of one-pot meals that are not especially atttractive :)

    1. Thank you! It is tough to make one-pot dishes look nice - maybe it's too many colors mixing together or something.

  2. They look store bought quality! How'd you get them so round?

    1. You're sweet! I used a doughnut pan - it has doughnut shaped holes that you fill halfway, like using a muffin tin for muffins. But they'll usually come out lumpy, one side higher than the other or something.

  5. Oh they look so yummy just when I've resolved to eat healthier this new year (which to me means less or no sugar!) I like there's a link to the non packet mix, so I can give it a try when I've tamed my weight a little, and not so strict on sugary things!

Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year - I'm catching up on all my reading now!

  6. presentation is not one of my strengths. i realized in culinary class that pretty much everyone else puts a lot of effort into presentation so i've tried to improve. when i asked my class partner how she had learned so much about presentation she said it was from watching cooking shows...
at home, i am too busy enjoying and eating to focus on presentation and plating, and personally, i like it that way!

    1. Agreed! I think more about perfecting the food's taste than plating and like it that way too :)
