+1 Walking Challenge

Normally, December begins about a three to four month stretch where I don't spend much time outside for leisurely activities. When it's super cold, all I do outside is walk into a store or work, get the mail, and shovel snow.
But Sarah's hosting a walking challenge this December. I adore this idea! Basically, the goal is to walk a minute more each day by getting up a minute earlier. Since I wake at 5:30 (when it's pitch dark), I really don't want to get up any earlier, so I'm trying to fit in my walking minutes after work. I'm happy to do my walk in the morning on the weekends though (less excuses that way)! On Wednesdays, I'm giving myself a free pass off from walking since I take a yoga class ;)

Dec. 3 - 11 minutes

Dec. 4 - yoga
Dec. 5 - 12 minutes
Dec. 6 - pouring rain, ugh
Dec. 7 - 23 minutes
Dec. 8 - snow, 4 minutes

On Friday night, I downloaded an audiobook from the library, Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson, to encourage me to walk further. It worked! But it was 26 degrees (-3.3° C) Saturday morning and my runny nose cut the walk short. So on Sunday I switched to my heavier gloves and brought along a handkerchief. It definitely helped, but the snow made things unpleasant. Maybe if I had a mask so I wasn't getting pelted in the face? haha

Here's my new getup:
Do you like cold weather? Do you find yourself spending less time outdoors in the winter?

  1. I am the same as you; I normally just walk to and from the car, and do snow shovelling. This year I am trying to walk to and from work; I managed it every day this week. I don't know if I'll be able to stick with it as it gets icy out.

    1. That's great progress! Be careful if you decide to brave the ice!

  2. In my neck of the woods we've been below freezing for quite some time. The past week we've been very cold with temperatures in the county ranging from low's of -17 F to high's of +5 F. The snow here is so frozen that it's almost a dry powder and will not hold together for a snowman; my daughter and I tried. According to the weatherman we're supposed to warm up to freezing rain and snow showers again in the next week. And no I'm not a fan of cold weather, were it not for both my side of the family and my husband's family living locally we would have long since moved to a warm tropical climate. ;)

    1. That's super cold! We'll be in the teens/low twenties here this week (and more snow on the way), but at least we're above 0°! I'd also like to live somewhere a little warmer but I can't imagine moving away from our families, either. Time to start planning next summer's vacation . . .

  3. Good on you - given the temps, for giving this a go! Wow, am I impressed, and shall never complain that it's 'cold' here, as it never even snows!!! It's amazing how easy it is to just add a little time each time, and it seems easy enough. Thanks for the update - I'm about to have my walk - I didn't wake this morning for it, as I knew I had to walk to an event tonight, and would get my minutes that way.

    1. Thank you for the push to try this! Adding the audiobook really made the minutes fly by and once all this snow stops, I think I'll be okay.

  4. I like the cold but I think we have different definition of cold. And even then, I like cold. So I can stay rugged up inside, reading books and blogs, watching DVDs and drinking cups of tea,

BTW, the weather that normally stops me from walking is heat. Today it was 30°C (86F) and sticky. I've had two showers and will have another one before bed. (We don't have air con and I don't like it to sleep anyway. Much prefer fresh air and a fan.)

    1. I love sleeping with the windows open too! Nothing beats that fresh air smell and all the bug and frog noises. We try not to turn our AC on unless it's going to be unbearable at night (usually above 90° F or 32° C is our cutoff).

  5. While our temperatures aren't nearly as cold, I still do feel myself not wanting to go outside much. Riding the scooter is kind of an adventure now.

Good on you for walking even when it's crazy cold out though!

  6. Nice work. It was below freezing much of last week and I still rode my bike to work!

  8. That's impressive to walk out in that temperature!

I bought a Fitbit pedometer about 18 months ago and I love it. I've averaged over 10,000 steps a day since I bought it. It was expensive at about $100, but it basically made me walk 2-3 more miles per day (!)...

    1. A pedometer would probably make me walk more too; I'll pop over and check out that post!

  9. Gosh, that's cold (yes, another Aussie reader here!) You are doing so well to get out there in such weather. I love Sarah's challenge - I'm *just* keeping up at this stage, but it's been a great way to get moving!

    1. Yes, I wouldn't say I'm excelling by any means - but the challenge is making me move more than I would've otherwise!
