My Life Mission

Over Labor Day weekend, my husband and I watched The Bucket List, a movie about two men with terminal illnesses that set out to achieve some lifelong wishes before they die. It got me thinking - I should make a list of things I want to accomplish, set some goals for life. (I'm usually a one goal at a time kind of person - like graduate high school, graduate college, land a great job. Not an overarching, I want to accomplish XYZ while in the workforce and will achieve it by doing this and this goal-setter.) There were a few ideas for my list that came to mind immediately, things I should certainly include. But I put it off and then life got busy as it tends to do.

Then I attended a meeting at work last week where my supervisor asked for suggestions because my company is revising its vision and mission statement. It's a process similar to creating a bucket list and goal setting in some regards, and reminded me of my own bucket list plans. I've been thinking about it ever since, and have actually started writing a few goals for myself.

But (there's always a but, right?) making a bucket list is scary. It's hard. I don't want to think about the fact that life is finite, especially not my life. I'm torn when I try to add anything to the list that's a stretch because I don't want to fail. So I add things, then delete those things (then add them again late at night). I fret over what Person A would think of a certain goal. Then remind myself that this is personal, so it doesn't matter what Person A thinks.

Ahhh.

It's a work in progress. Coincidentally, just like my life.

Do you have life goals or a bucket list?

  1. Yep, I have a bucket list! I posted about it, but I won't put the link in, in case the spam monitor chews it up. It's scary, but fun too - don't be too worried about achieving it all, but when you're in a rut, look to the list as a way to reenergise you, and find something you do want to do, and work towards it. I've added things like running a half marathon (21km), as a non runner, and just yesterday finished a 9km race! Insane, but progress. And a scary goal still and when I made it, but now I know it's achievable. Please share your list when you're ready!

    1. Thank you for the kind words! I like how you frame the idea as challenges to reenergize you.

I'm heading over to visit your bucket list :)

  2. I don't have a written or published list, but I suppose that in my mind, it does exist! Like you, I am reluctant to share it or be held accountable. Plus, it has uncommon things on it, such as, I want to see a concert by the band Sigur Ros in their home country, Iceland!

    1. Yep, I keep telling myself to just worry about me, and I'm glad to hear you feel the same. I think your concert idea is a great one - I've never heard of a goal like it! I'm off to search for Sigur Ros on youtube . .

  3. On my 30th Birthday I started a bucket list with the realization that I am getting older, roughly 1/3rd of my life is over and that it does happen to us all (the alternative is painful, lol). I also realized that many people wait until they're older, retired, or when they have time and money. Truthfully if people wait for all of those factors to be perfectly aligned it will never happen. My bucket list inspired my older sister and a friend to start bucket lists as well. As far as uncommon goals, etc. that is what makes it a personal list. My goals would not, nor should be, the same as anyone else's goals. We're all individuals that have had different experiences, and have different potentials in life and that is what makes us unique. ;) And I do enjoy reading your blog.

    1. Yeah, getting older is sneaking up on me. And I agree, no guarantee for more time or money in the future, so might as well start now. :)

I'm glad you're enjoying my blog!
