What the Average American Eats Each Year

I really love info graphics. They make facts fun and comprehensible. This one really surprised me - especially the milk section. If I'm reading this correctly, the average person eats 31 pounds of cheese + 601 pounds of other dairy products AND drinks 181 pounds of milk?! Whoa.
What surprises you the most? Do you think your eating habits match the average American diet?

  1. Wow, cool infographic! (Love those!) We've cut down (almost to zero) corn syrup, I don't drink soda, minimize my coffee intake, and we've gone down to M-F vegetarianism...so I'm pretty sure I don't eat like this. :-) (But I am all about pizza and ice cream, in moderation, hee hee.) I know you don't eat meat, but how does your diet differ?

    1. No meat, coffee, soda, or artificial sweeteners (well, very few - I am tempted by the occasional piece of candy), and I eat way more pizza than french fries :) And I think I eat more vegetables and grains than these averages, maybe because I'm not eating meat?

  2. Holy Moly! I'm blown away by the dairy products category... especially since it doesn't include cheese! If I'm reading it correctly, only a small part of that dairy category is milk... so I'm struggling to figure out what the rest is! Whatever it is, we're eating more of it than we are vegetables! Yikes!

    1. Yes, me too! When I set aside "beverage milks" and cheese, the only dairy products I can come up with are yogurt and ice cream (and maybe a small portion of milk/cream for baking, sauces, and soups?), but there's no way that could equal 400 odd pounds, right? I definitely don't feel like I consume that much dairy . .

  3. I drink a ton of milk, between cereal for breakfast and then just having a glass occasionally. But 600 lbs...wow! I also have a feeling that I eat more fruit than that in a year. Rarely a day goes by without multiple servings. I love my fruit. :)

    1. Yeah, 273 pounds of fruit a year is less than a pound a day, so I think it would be pretty easy to eat more than the average. Fruit salad is one of my favorite mid-morning snacks. :) I don't eat much fruit in the winter though (it just doesn't taste as good), so the average is probably about right for me.
