Mini Green Changes: Use a Ladycup

Hopefully I'm correct in assuming that the people reading this blog are female . . and if not, you may want to skip this post ;)

Today's mini green change is:

I think periods suck. The hassle, the cramps, the mood swings, the incessant food cravings (always for weird stuff that I don't have at home!). BUT life goes on. Let's fast forward past the complain-fest.

Enter something new - this cup - which I heard about from Crunchy Chicken. I read all her posts about it, and then I turned to the ladies on this forum, who gave even more information (down the nitty-gritty). It probably took me 3-4 months to work up the courage, but I finally ordered a Ladycup (the forum will help you figure out which brand you want) in 2009. And after I made it through my first period wearing it, I haven't looked back.

(Are you wondering why I said after my first period? Well because there was a lot of crying, panicking, and general hysteria the first time I tried to take it out. Thankfully, my boyfriend (now my hubby) wisely suggested I take a break and watch some Lost with him. Round 2 was much smoother.)

But now I adore my Ladycup - I never have to buy tampons/pads again, I'm saving money, I can wear whatever I want with no worries - I truly dread my period less because of it. Basically, I do my empty/reinsert routine in the morning and don't have to think about it again until I'm getting ready for bed, and one less thing to remember during the day is a beautiful thing. :) I have warn you, cups are a little on the expensive side (about $35), but they last for years, so you'll end up saving money in the long run.

I'd love to hear what think - regardless of whether you're intrigued or grossed out by this idea!

  1. I became a convert years ago. I bought a Diva cup because at the time it was the only one I knew about. I totally LOVE it... it's so wonderful not to have to think about your period more than twice a day!

One word of caution though... Don't know if you're supposed to do this with all brands, but with the Diva cup you're supposed to boil it when you're done using it for the month to kill any lingering germs. This can be a tad bit... um... problematic for the more scatterbrained in the crowd! http://ecocatlady.blogspot.com/2011/01/one-flaming-hot-diva-cup.html

  2. I have been thinking about this for quite some time, I think it's time for me to do more research and make it happen. Thanks for this post!
